The Last Convict is Anthony Hill's latest historical novel: based on the life of Samuel Speed, who is believed to have been the last transported convict to die in Australia.
Transported to Fremantle in 1866 for setting fire to a barley stack, Sam Speed lived into the modern era. He died at the Perth Old Men's Home in November 1938 – on the eve of the Second World War and within the lifetimes of many people still living.
Published by Michael Joseph, an imprint of Penguin Random House, the book contains 355 pages, including Appendixes, a photo of Speed and a full set of Chapter Notes.
